Bandgap properties of two-dimensional low-index photonic crystals

چکیده
We study the bandgap properties of twodimensional photonic crystals created by a lattice of rods or holes conformed in a symmetric or asymmetric triangular structure. Using the plane-wave analysis, we calculate a minimum value of the refractive index contrast for opening both partial and full two-dimensional spectral gaps for both TM and TE polarized waves. We also analyze the effect of ellipticity of rods and holes and their orientation on the threshold value and the relative size of the bandgap. PACS 42.70.Qs, 78.20.Bh, 78.20.Ci

Phase Properties of One-Dimensional Quaternary Photonic Crystals
In this paper, properties of reflection phase in one-dimensional quaternary photonic crystals combining dispersive meta-materials and positive index materials are investigated by transfer matrix method. Two omnidirectional band gaps are located in the band structure of considered structure. However, we limit our studies to the frequency range of the second wide band gap. We observe that the val...

We develop a class of supercell photonic crystals supporting complete photonic bandgaps based on breaking spatial symmetries of the underlying primitive photonic crystal. One member of this class based on a two-dimensional honeycomb structure supports a complete bandgap for an indexcontrast ratio as low as nhigh/nlow = 2.1, making this the first such 2D photonic crystal to support a complete ba...
متن کاملTunable photonic bandgap structures for optical interconnects
As continued progress towards faster, low power consuming microelectronic devices becomes increasing difficult due to the scaling challenges of electrical interconnects, it becomes even more critical to explore alternative technologies. Tunable porous silicon photonic bandgap structures are viable building blocks for optical interconnects, which present a possible long term solution to the inte...
متن کاملPolarizing beam-splitter based on defective photonic crystals
The performance of a polarizing beam splitter based on the one-dimensional photonic crystals (1D-PCs), is theoretically investigated. The polarizing beam splitter consists of a symmetric stack of the low-index quarter-wave plates and the high-index half-wave plates with a central defect layer of air. The linear transmission properties of the polarizing beam splitter are numerically simulat...
متن کاملNumerical studies of 2D photonic crystals: Waveguides, coupling between waveguides and filters
In photonic crystals, light propagation is forbidden in a certain wavelength range, the bandgap. In a two-dimensional crystal composed of parallel high-refractive index rods in a low-index background a line defect can be formed by removing a row of these rods, which can act as a waveguide for frequencies in the bandgap of the crystal. In order to get more insight into the main features of such ...
